Sex and Zen slated for U.K. release

3D pic breaking records around the world

BEIJING — China Lion Film Distribution will distribute “Sex and Zen 3D : Extreme Ecstasy,” the 3D soft-porn pic that has broken records in Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand, into Blighty and Ireland.

Pic, which bills itself as the first serious 3D porn pic, will release exclusively through UK cinema chain Odeon with a Sept. 2 release date.

China Lion also announced an exclusive ancillary tie in with UK specialist Metrodome, who will work with China Lion in managing the UK theatrical release.

Pic has done boffo B.O. since its release in Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong, with opening week sessions completely sold out, and it beat the opening day grosses of ‘Avatar’ and ‘Titanic’ with an opening day gross of $351,000.

It was given a boost by Mainland Chinese tour groups nipping across the border to watch the movie, a reworking of the 1991 Hong Kong cult sensation “Sex and Zen.” Pic features Japanese adult video starlets Saori Hara and Yukiko Suho, along with Hong Kong thesp Vonnie Lu.

China Lion also announced that it will team up with Fox International Productions to co-distribute Fox’s Mandarin-language film “Love in Space” in North America, Australia and New Zealand.

Helmed by Wing Shya and Tony Chan, “Love in Space” is the follow up to the directing team’s Chinese B.O. hit, “Hot Summer Days.” The film is the second co-production between Fox International Productions and Huayi Brothers.

The film is set for release in China on Sept. 9 and will release day-and-date in North America, Australia & New Zealand through China Lion’s exclusive deal with AMC for the US and Toronto and with Cineplex in Vancouver.
